The classical definition of racism, which linked it with totalitarian policies such as fascism, Nazism, Stalinism, or colonial rule, is now obsolete: racism today is expressed through interethnic violence in the Third World and in newly liberalized Eastern Europe, and through xenophobia in the Western World. Analyzes racism in democratic countries where middle-class citizens fear loss of values and chaos, and call for the closing of borders and an end to immigration in order "to preserve democracy." Ch. 4 (pp. 59-73), "Il bravo italiano, " refers to the racial laws of 1938 and condemns the Italians' indifference towards the fate of the Jews, as well as their efforts to forget the racial past. Ch. 6 (pp. 94-111), "Vecchie cure, nuovo malanno, " recalls anti-Jewish stereotypes prevalent today, among them those of a Jewish invasion and of a conspiracy.
