A young man born in 1915, a family with a complicated past, raised by an unlovable stepmother who soon pushes him to run away. As a teenager, Valerio Marsili begins to hang out with the street kids of San Frediano, then comes his studies in literature and his love for Gloria. And it is in the 1940s that fascism and the war in Africa burst into Valerio's life, then Milan and Communism. After the working world depicted in "Metello", and the incandescent historical-psychological portrait of Bourgeois society in "Scialo", here Pratolini concludes his "Italian History" in a continuous diary, between fiction and autobiography, recovering the past to involve it in the actions and thoughts of the present.
